Jack G Bowman

Sometimes the Answer is Harsh

Hidden halls behind stone that slides

dust covers, footprints still present from the last few visitors,

this new interloper follows a scroll, a map of sorts

travels deep down within, regrets not bringing a better mask, the particles in the air,

travel straight through, into his biology,

bring sharp, pains to his stomach and below,

this passes when he reaches the end of the lowest chamber

a doorway, he checks the scroll,

pulls chords in order on the right side,

the way ahead opens, rush of wind

scream of trapped spirits

knock him down, when he rises, shines his light

the message above him reads, in the old language:

“In your lust to know, you have released one more

danger upon the world.”

He goes, head down, scroll left behind, the particles return to his stomach, then into his mind, translation echoes in his head, then fade to remote.
